The best Industrial Hygienists have a checkered past. This has become one of my core beliefs. My checkerboard began in Pharmacy school, changed to Biology, a combination providing a good base for toxicology. Graduated with a B. S. in Biology then spent 3 ½ years as Scientific Editor with Biosciences Information Services. Got tired reading about it and decided to do some of the doing. After an M.S. in Environmental Health with emphasis in Industrial Hygiene, the journey brought me to Argonne National Laboratory, 6 ½ years of consulting (Occusafe, Inc.), and then back to Argonne National Laboratory. My 30 + yrs. of Industrial Hygiene have been spent chasing asbestos, lead, beryllium, ventilation, noise, indoor air quality, and now nanoparticles. Review of experimental plans, work packages, and database administrator duties for Chemical Management and Workplace Sampling have put the old editing and information management skills to full use. Skills I presumed a waste when I changed careers. Nothing is ever wasted or lost in IH, it’s all connected.
Married to Patti for 35 yrs, three children. When not at work, can frequently be found enjoying activities with our 3 granddaughters.
